Why Five Almonds
What do the 5 almonds represent?
At Italian weddings, exactly five almonds are given out. These five almonds signify for the newlywed couple: health, wealth, happiness, fertility, and longevity. Since the original favour, wedding favours have transformed throughout the years.
Why are they sometimes called Jordan Almonds?
According to the Food and Drug Administration, the name Jordan almond may have originated from the French word “jardin,” which means garden. Others say Jordan almonds resemble a variety of almond that grows along the Jordan River in Palestine.
Jordan almonds are pastel-coloured, candy coated almonds. They differ from candied or sugared almonds in that the coating of the Jordan almond is a complete candy husk that forms around the almond, whereas candied almonds are merely coated with sugar and the almond is still very evident.
What does bomboniere mean?
Bomboniere ( from the French bonbonnière, a box containing “bonbons”) also known as “favours”, are gifts given by hosts to their guests on special occasions such as weddings, baptism, First Communion or Confirmation.
